1. Who we are

The Local Biz Club ("we", "us") is operated by Megan Nakazawa. We run this website, the member app at app.thelocalbizclub.com, an email newsletter, and consulting and website design services. We are the data controller for the information described here. You can reach us any time at hello@thelocalbizclub.com.

2. What we collect

Information you give us

  • Newsletter signup: your first name and email address.
  • Enquiry forms (consulting, website design): your name, email, business name, and whatever you tell us about your business, timing and budget.
  • Free tools: the website URL or business description you paste in. The website audit tool fetches and analyses the public page at the URL you give it.
  • Membership: account details, and billing information handled by our payment processor. We never see or store your full card number.
  • Consulting and design clients: the business information you share with us in order for us to do the work.

Information collected automatically

  • Standard server and analytics data: IP address, browser and device type, referring page, pages viewed, and how you moved through the site.
  • Interaction events — which buttons you clicked, which questions you opened, how far down a page you scrolled — used in aggregate to work out which parts of the site are useful.

3. Why we collect it

  • To provide what you asked for — send the newsletter, run the free tools, reply to your enquiry, deliver your membership or project. (Legal basis: contract or your consent.)
  • To run and improve the business — understand what's working on the site, fix what isn't, and decide what to build next. (Legal basis: legitimate interests.)
  • To market responsibly — tell you about the club, courses and services. Every marketing email has a one-click unsubscribe and we honour it immediately. (Legal basis: consent, which you can withdraw at any time.)
  • To meet legal and accounting obligations — tax records, and keeping proof that you consented to be emailed. (Legal basis: legal obligation.)

We do not sell your personal information. We never have and we're not going to.

4. Cookies and analytics

We use cookies and similar technologies for three things: keeping the site working, measuring traffic, and measuring advertising.

  • Essential — remembering your session and preferences. The site doesn't work properly without these.
  • Analytics — Google Analytics, to count visits and see which pages lead to signups. We ask Google to anonymise IP addresses.
  • Advertising — the Meta pixel, so that if we run ads we can tell whether they actually worked and avoid showing them to people who already joined.

You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, and you can opt out of Google Analytics with the official browser add-on. Blocking analytics and advertising cookies won't stop you using the site.

5. Who we share it with

Only the service providers we need to run the business, and only what they need:

  • Email: Kit (ConvertKit) — newsletter delivery.
  • Payments: our payment processor — subscription billing.
  • Analytics and advertising: Google, Meta.
  • Hosting and infrastructure: the providers running this site and the member app.
  • Professional advisers: our accountant, and legal advisers if we ever need them.

Some of these providers are based outside Canada, including in the United States, so your information may be processed there under that country's laws. We only use providers who commit to appropriate safeguards. We will also disclose information where we're legally required to.

6. How long we keep it

  • Newsletter subscribers: until you unsubscribe, then a minimal suppression record so we don't accidentally email you again.
  • Enquiries: up to two years, so we have context if you come back.
  • Members and clients: for the life of the relationship plus seven years, for tax and accounting.
  • Analytics: aggregated, typically retained up to 14 months.

7. Your rights

Wherever you live, you can ask us to:

  • tell you what personal information we hold about you and give you a copy;
  • correct anything that's wrong;
  • delete it;
  • stop using it for marketing;
  • restrict or object to certain processing, or port your data elsewhere.

Email hello@thelocalbizclub.com and we'll action it within 30 days at the outside — usually much faster. We won't charge you or make it awkward. If you're in Canada and you're not happy with our response, you can complain to the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia, or to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada. If you're in the UK or EU, you can complain to your local supervisory authority.

8. Children

This is a service for people running businesses. It isn't directed at anyone under 16, and we don't knowingly collect information from children. If you believe a child has given us information, email us and we'll delete it.

9. Changes

If we change this policy we'll update the date at the top. If the change is significant, we'll tell subscribers and members by email rather than quietly editing the page.

10. Contact

Questions, requests, or complaints: hello@thelocalbizclub.com. A real person reads it.
